4 Things You Can Do to Keep Your Dog Happy at a Dog Hotel

May 26, 2023
While it's great being able to take a vacation, it can be hard leaving your pet behind. At such a time, you may have to look for an appropriate boarding facility to host them until you get back. Before you and the family head off to your tropical island vacation or big city adventure, here are a few things you should do to make your pup more comfortable while in the dog hotel.

1. Do Your Research

No pet owner wants to leave their beloved animal in just anyone's hands. That's why it's vital to do proper research before you drop your dog off. According to Inc, 40% of the customers who engage with dog daycare businesses are between the ages of 30 to 49. Up to 75% of Americans in their 30s have at least one dog at home. There may be many others in your age group and situation who can give you a recommendation on where to go.

2. Provide Their Favorite Items

Your dog will undoubtedly miss you. However, you can ease some of the anxiety by leaving them with something that has your natural scent on it. Leave a small pillow or unwashed piece of clothing with your pup, along with at least a couple of their favorite toys. Don't forget their favorite doggy blanket! If your dog loves a certain treat or has a particular diet, you may also want to bring some to the hotel for the staff to give out.

3. Introduce the Place to Them Beforehand

If your dog is particularly anxious or suffers from separation issues, you certainly don't want to drop them off at a strange place and leave. Test the place a week or so beforehand with an overnight stay to see how your dog reacts. It's a good way to see if your puppy can bond with the staff or if they'll howl for as long as you're away.

4. Make an Appointment at the Animal Hospital

Even if your dog has all their shots, you should still take them to the local vet to be on the safe side. Before you board your dog, you want the vet to ensure no pre-existing illnesses or conditions are lingering that might be a problem and force you to cut your trip short.

A dog hotel can be a great place to keep your dog while you're away on vacation or on a business trip. However, all dog facilities aren't the same, so do the proper research and have peace of mind about your pup's comfort before you say goodbye for a couple of days.
